FORM: DarkSheep Studios Brings a New South African Creative Vision to New York

DarkSheep Studios’ Eight-Year Journey Reaches the Global Stage

South African multidisciplinary creative studio DarkSheep Studios has been officially selected to showcase at New York Fashion Week Festival on 12 September 2026, marking a defining milestone in the studio’s eight-year journey and its first official presentation on an international fashion week platform.

Founded by Creative Director Boitumelo “Melo” Nhlapo, DarkSheep Studios is recognised for its multidisciplinary approach to fashion, creative direction, interior design, and visual storytelling. Through concept-driven work, the studio explores the intersection of culture, craftsmanship, design, and contemporary African narratives, creating experiences that extend beyond traditional creative disciplines.

The selection represents an important step in the studio’s continued growth and reinforces its vision of positioning South African creativity within the global design conversation. Participation in New York Fashion Week Festival provides an opportunity to engage with an international audience of industry professionals, media, buyers, creatives, and cultural leaders while showcasing the innovation emerging from the African continent.

FORM Blends Biomimicry, African Storytelling and Japanese Minimalism

For its international debut, DarkSheep Studios will unveil FORM, a multidisciplinary creative project inspired by biomimicry, African storytelling, and Japanese minimalism. More than a fashion collection, FORM has been conceived as an evolving creative platform that will continue beyond New York through an immersive installation and a cinematic fashion film. The project reflects the studio’s commitment to creating work that is both culturally meaningful and commercially relevant.

“This selection is more than an invitation to showcase a collection. It is recognition of the vision that has shaped DarkSheep Studios over the past eight years,” says Boitumelo “Melo” Nhlapo, Founder and Creative Director. “We’ve always believed that fashion can exist in conversation with art, architecture, film and spatial design. Presenting our work in New York is an opportunity to share a uniquely South African creative perspective with the world while opening new possibilities for collaboration, innovation and cultural exchange.”

As preparations continue for New York Fashion Week Festival, DarkSheep Studios is inviting conversations with organisations, brands, institutions, and private investors interested in becoming part of this milestone. Through strategic sponsorships, financial investment, and in-kind partnerships, collaborators have the opportunity to support a project that extends beyond the runway into immersive exhibition, cinematic storytelling, and long-term cultural impact.

With New York Fashion Week Festival serving as the beginning of a much larger creative journey, DarkSheep Studios remains committed to producing work that celebrates African innovation, fosters meaningful partnerships, and contributes to the continued growth of South Africa’s creative economy.
