Tonight, 13 August 2021, will see the premiere of House of Chefs on DStv’s HONEY channel (173) at 9 PM. The competitive cooking show will have South African celebrity chef and restaurant owner Siba Mtongana as the judge and trusty host, Ugandan TV personality Sheilah Gashumba.
House of Chefs will see eight trainee chefs battle it out for an internship at Chef Siba’s fine-dining restaurant. The winner will also receive a R70 000 cash prize. “This is a career-changing opportunity for young chefs,” says Chef Siba.
“During their internship at my restaurant, Siba, located in a prime spot in Cape Town, the winner will work closely with me as we explore and uplift African food to new heights in the fine-dining space. And let’s not forget that Cape Town is one of Africa’s culinary hubs. This is the opportunity of a lifetime for any budding chef.”
House of Chefs contenders
The contestants include chefs from all across the continent. They include:
- Ingrid Musabe, 26, from Rwanda
- Ruth Buliamu, 26, from Congo
- Tobe Onyenyeonwu, 21, from Nigeria
- Joseph Odoom, 26, from Ghana
- Les Sempele, 27, from Kenya
- Thabo Phake, 24, South Africa
- Merry Ziringa, 23, from DRC
- Kalaba Chikamba, 21, from Zambia
South African celebrity chef, Siba Mtongana, takes centre stage as the show’s judge. Mtongana is widely known for authoring authentically South African recipes in her best-selling cookbooks, Welcome to My Table and Siba: Let’s Cook. She also hosted her own cooking show, Siba’s Table on DStv’s Food Network. The show went on to bag multiple international awards including a silver medal at the New York Festivals and TV Awards in 2019.
“House of Chefs is fresh and new,” says Zinzi Velelo, HONEY’s Head of Content. “Not only must you cook well to stay in the competition, but you also have to fight to stay in the game, and if you are voted out, you need to scramble to find a way back in.”
