We are currently in the grip of a cold snap and keeping warm is a top priority. Dressing for times when you are indoors is easy enough, the challenge comes when you need (and want) to step out.
One of the best ways to keep warm, while looking good in winter, is layering. Wearing different types of clothing on top of each other is the best way to stay warm, flexible and fashionable as you go about your day.
Being able to put together layers of clothing in order to keep warm while staying fashionable is a skill, an art form if you will. If you find it a bit more challenging than most, here is a quick guide to help you get started courtesy of Rookie USA.
5 simple steps to layer clothes
Vest
Start your outfit off with a vest. It can either be long or short depending on how you feel or your entire outfit. This is the base on which you will build everything on top of. It is also one of the best defences against getting cold as it preserves your natural body heat.
Long-sleeved top
Right after your vest, wear your long-sleeved top. It is your second defence against the harsh elements. Be mindful of the colour and style as the day ahead may warm up. Be sure it matches the rest of your outfit just in case the climate forces you to switch things up a bit
Sweater or hoodie
This is will be the much heavier item that will keep you warm. it will also be your staple piece that will command cohesion from the rest of your outfit. Have fun with your seater or hoodie and let it be the purveyor of your personality.
Zip-up jacket
Encapsulate everything on your torso with a zip-up jacket. Nylon or poly blend jackets are the best as they also provide added water-free protection from the rain.
Jogger
Match with a pair of warm and comfortable joggers. Depending on the look and style that you are going for, you can play around with colour blocking, jogger or even a denim jogger.
There you have it. A complete multi-layered outfit that can take you through the day. Add gloves and a beanie for those extra cold days or to add an extra dimension to your look.
