Imimoya: Naima Kay’s new hit single

December 7, 2020

South African Afro-Jazz singer Naima Kay has released her new single Imimoya ahead of her upcoming album. Imimoya is Naima’s plea to the higher powers to fix our country, forgive us and protect us.

Naima believes that what God said in the book of 2 Peter 2:1 is happening in front of our eyes and the wrath of God is upon us for our disobedience.

Imimoya is about the things that we have gone through as a country. I realised that a lot had happened including Gender-Based Violence. There is a scripture that talks about destructive heresies and people denying God. I thought to myself – have we reached the days when God is angry with us for the way we have behaved?”

The single was produced by Sphiwe Jula who also produced Isoka lam. These songs are an introduction into what we can expect from Naima’s upcoming album – an album she will drop early next year. She had intended on naming her album Queen Kay but has advised that this could change.

“We thought the album would release this year, but due to COVID, we had to postpone. We were afraid that since we work with people, it’s not a good time to release because we need to promote the songs. The album will come out early next year. We just shot a music video for Imimoya and it’s out now.

“I thought I would name my album Queen Kay because I thought the album would be all about Naima and her growth. This might change since we have added a lot of things to the album and there are features now,” said Naima.

Naima released her debut album in 2013 titled Umsebenzi, which saw her win newcomer of the year at the 2014 South African Music Awards. It was soon followed by her second album, Ngiyavuma and her latest full-body of work, all about love. Early 2021, she will release her fourth album which will be rich with love songs.

Naima said, “There is not much that is different with this album. The old Naima can still be heard. However, I did try to introduce a new sound on a song called Isoka lami. It’s a tribal house song. I was trying to introduce a sound that people are not used to getting from me.

“When you listen to this album, you will see that I have grown and have learnt so much along the way.”

In 2014, we celebrated Naima Kay for her single Sokwenzenjani featuring the late Robbie Malinga. Although there will never be a replacement for Robbie Malinga, Mondli Ngcobo has proven to be the perfect feature when it comes to love songs or if you are looking for someone with a euphonious voice and badass producing skills.

“Performing with Robbie was great. I was looking forward to being on stage with him on the 26 December 2017. God didn’t allow it because he passed away on the 25th.

“I did a love song with Mondli Ngcobo on the album because I love his talent and the song is in the same standard as the one I did with Robbie. I look forward to that. I know people are going to love the song,” said Naima.

Imimoya and its visuals are out now and available on all digital platforms. You can follow her on social media for her gig guide.
