Nigerian singer and rapper Cheque, known as Superboy Cheque by his fans, is making waves in the music scene. The 20-year-old Zoom hitmaker says getting into the industry wasn’t even intentional for him.
A chemical engineering graduate from Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State, Cheque started singing in 2014 but committed to this career in 2015. He gained popularity and a platform to further prove himself when he released his 2020 single, Zoom from his debut EP, ‘Razor‘. Razor rose to top 5 on iTunes within 24 hours of its release.
Cheque said, “Zoom was spontaneous. I did not intend to make a track. I had to accept that people already listen to trap songs, so I decided to make my sound authentic and decided to release this because people always tell me not to waste my time doing trap songs, I won’t go anywhere so I said what if I do it in my own style, they say no, but I went with it anyway.”
Cheque followed this buzz with a highly anticipated feature with his friend, Fireboy DML, on a track titled, History. The Andyr-produced jam is a hip-hop and trap mix.
“If it wasn’t Fireboy it wouldn’t have been anybody. We are very close. It was just like come through let’s make some songs.
Definitely gonna be more collaborations, maybe an album. We talked about this a long time ago, maybe there will be,” said Cheque.
Following the successful release of Razor, under record label Penthauze Records, Cheque is now working on a new album. The album is complete. Cheque has not given the release dates of his album however, he assures us that he is aiming much higher than his Razor EP.
Cheque said he feels like he is just getting started, that he is not satisfied at all.
He added, “I feel like there is a lot more I can do. I appreciate what is happening right now because I know what can happen. I feel like there is a lot, it’s only the beginning.”
Cheque explores the many genres of music, but he is a hip-hop artist at heart.
“Honestly I don’t have a box. I just go with my feelings – afro trap, hip hop, whichever genre I am feeling at that moment because I don’t really fix myself to one sound. Originally and ultimately, I am a hip hop artist,” he said.
Cheque recently released a single titled Call Me Baby. You can expect to find this song in his upcoming album. Stay updated on the release of this project and follow Cheque on his socials.
