Review: Entice your tastebuds with the Espolòn Tequila

September 14, 2022

Crafted in the cultural cradle of Los Altos de Jalisco, Mexico, Espolòn Tequila was born out of a need to share a good drink with some good friends. It is a spirit best enjoyed with everyone regardless of preference and embodies the spirit and pride of the North American country.

Made to elevate every occasion, Espolòn Tequila offers five premium drinks in the form of a:

  • Blanco
  • Reposado
  • Añejo
  • Reposado Chardonnay
  • Cristalino

All of their tequilas are made from hand-harvested 100% Blue Weber agaves – emphasis on the Blue. Mainly grown in two regions of Mexico, the agave azul gives Espolòn its distinctly sweet, honey-like flavour.

Espolòn range

The Blanco is considered to be the truest form of tequila. Also commonly referred to as silver in English, it is an unaged tequila spirit. The Reposado, which translates directly into restful, is a rested tequila. Espolòn Reposado is usually aged for a minimum of two months in an American oak barrel. The Añejo, which means old, is an extra-aged tequila. It is typically aged for no less than 11 months in American oak barrels. After this, it is moved to ex-Wild Turkey bourbon barrels to create a more pronounced personality.

The Espolòn Reposado Chardonnay is rested for two months in American oak. From there, it is transferred to Chardonnay barrels for – what I can imagine – a more caramel and fruity taste. Cristalino Tequila is the masterpiece of the collection. It is a delicate blend of Añejo, extra Añejo and still water all filtered through charcoal for a clear tequila with all the complexities of an Espolòn Tequila

Unfortunately, the latter two are only available in Mexico. Adding two more reasons why you need to go and visit the beautiful Land of Enchantment.

That is a little – a little – bit about Espolòn’s entire range. Now, to get into the purest dream – their Blanco Tequila.

Espolòn Blanco Tequila

A white spirit with an array of aromas, the Blanco is where you will find the essence of Espolòn. Also referred to as a plata or white, Espolòn Blanco Tequila is a crystal clear liquid that can easily be mistaken for still water. When you swirl it around and notice its beautiful long legs, that don’t break easily, you then recognise it as a good quality spirit. These legs are also known as the “lagrimas de la agave“, which translates to tears of the agave.

Tasting notes

The Blanco has a fragrant smell with a sweet and fruity aroma accompanied by a touch of spice. The sweetness given off is that of the agave azul from which the spirit is made of. After a swirl of your glass, you can expect to pick up heavy citrus notes of mostly lime. I also picked up a faint but present note of vanilla, which adds a nice kick to the freshness of the tequila.

The Los Altos de Jalisco-made spirit has a bite when taken neat. Although not too harsh, you should expect it on that 1st sip. It is a great entry-level tequila for those weary or curious about tequila. Soft on the pallet, it has a flavour, and the Blanco is an excellent introduction to the essence of Espolòn.

Espolòn Blanco Tequila
The Espolòn Blanco Tequila goes well in classic tequila-based cocktails.

Personally, I’m a fan of a double tequila and tonic. Espolòn Blanco Tequila also pairs well with:

  • Grapefruit soda
  • Pineapple juice
  • Vermouth

Turn every occasion into a moment with the 100% puro agave azul from Espolòn by making fan favourite cocktails such as:

  • Margarita
  • Tequila Negroni
  • Paloma
  • The Tequila Sunrise

Enjoy the unaged 100% puro agave azul with fresh seafood such as sashimi or sushi. Alternatively, the Espolòn Blanco Tequila also goes down well with fried fish, prawns, squid and, of course, tacos.

Enjoy responsibly.
