Highlighting unions rooted in tradition and living in modern times, The Real City Makoti is bound to amplify honest and emotional conversations about African marriages in the 21st century. Premiering on Friday, 30 January at 18h30 on Mzansi Wethu (Channel 163), the 13-part reality series will give us follow the lives of five women who are navigating, marriage, motherhood, culture, and their identity in South Africa.
Behind the Scenes: Who Created The Real City Makoti
Brought on to life by Thabile Ngwato-Tau is the founder and CEO of Rapid Innovation Group, which is also home to Newzroom Afrika, eMedia, and Blue Stream Technologies, among others, The Real City Makoti is a brand-new reality series, created and produced proudly by Ray Content Hub.
“Reality television has been a unique undertaking for us, but one we felt fully equipped to take on because of our live broadcast experience. And what better way to begin than with a show focused on five captivating women navigating the nuances of modern-day marriage?” Ngwato-Tau commented on their new production.
The Real City Makoti is comprised of an intriguing and diverse mix of wives, showcasing what it means to be a traditional and modern wife. The show will embrace the unique dynamics of blended families, polygamy, and non-traditional relationship structures.
Meet The Real City Makotis
Anika Dambuza
Capetonian Anika’s story is one of fierce love, radical sacrifice and the collision of cultures. Born into a small Afrikaner family, she fell in love with Sihle, a Xhosa man, and now navigates life as a new mother, wife, and trailblazer who has forged her own path from leaving university to become an entrepreneur. Her journey explores identity, ancestral responsibility and the demands of modern family life.
“I was so excited to be on the show,” Anika said on her choice to join the production, “for representation’s sake and also just learning, other people learning, I think that’s important to our country”
Keneilwe Mofokeng
Born in Lomanyane Village near Mafikeng in the North West, Keneilwe blends spiritual calling with family complexity. A sangoma and first wife in a polygamous household, she navigates cohabitation with multiple wives, children from previous marriages and evolving family dynamics. Her story highlights flexibility, cultural depth and the emotional intricacies of modern polygamy.
“I wanted to show how I balance being a sangoma, a wife, and a woman who moved from being the third wife to the first wife. A lot happens in my life, and I wanted people to see that these things are real. Yes, traditions happen naturally, but sometimes they are also instructed through spiritual guidance. I wanted people to understand that,” Keneilwe said on joining the show.
Linda Mbunyuza
Linda’s story is the classic tale of a small village girl from Butterworth in the Eastern Cape who came to live the city dream in Johannesburg. Over the years, she has built her career and now navigates life between global jet-setting with her husband and the deeply traditional rural homestead where she negotiates her identity every day. Her journey explores ambition, ancestral expectations and the realities of modern married life.
When asked why she decided to join the show, she expressed, “What made me decide personally was that I had been approached for reality TV before, but I never felt like I fit the descriptions of those shows. When I was approached for The Real City Makoti, I immediately resonated with the concept.”
Lucy Mahlangu
Lucy tackles the challenges of balancing personal ambition with the expectations of society. Born in Sekhukhune, Limpopo, she has moved through Pretoria and Witbank to build her career while navigating her marriage to a Pedi man within a polygamous household. Her story explores self-discovery and the negotiations that come with modern city-life marriage.
Lucy expressed, “I want people to see that it’s okay to do things in your own way. Don’t seek validation from others, especially in polygamy, we are being judged so much.”
Sessy Mofokeng
From Didiza, East Rand, Sessy’s story is raw and unfiltered, reflecting love, betrayal and self-discovery. A mother of four, she embraces polyamory with her partner Collin, challenging traditional monogamy while navigating family expectations and personal truth. Her life is an illustration of strength and modern relationship intricacies.
“I agreed to be on the show to break stereotypes and show that there are different ways of loving and building a family,” Sessy expressed on her decision to be on the show.

Produced by Ray Content Hub, The Real City Makoti stands out for its authenticity and emotional intelligence. It avoids glamorising or moralising the lives it portrays, instead allowing the women’s experiences to unfold naturally.
