Ocean Basket’s Mediterranean Summer Bash: A Coastal Dream in Pretoria

December 12, 2024

Ocean Basket Is Bringing A Mediterranean Summer

On Friday the 6th of December 2024, Menlyn Mall in Pretoria became the unexpected gateway to the Mediterranean. Guests arrived expecting their beloved Ocean Basket – but instead stepped into a full-on coastal dream, the kind that makes you wonder if you accidentally booked a ticket to Santorini.

The afternoon kicked off with a selection of champagne and a banquet of oysters. Confession time: it was my first go at oysters. One of the managers, Corné (bless his culinary wisdom) suggested I try them with chimichurri. I hesitated, but boy, did my taste buds do the cha-cha when that flavour combo hit. Safe to say, I’m now that person who pretends oysters have always been my thing.

From Santorini-Inspired Décor to #OBSummer Magic

Everywhere you turned, the #OBSummer theme was in full swing. Wheelbarrows overflowing with rosé and white wine on ice? Check. Mediterranean table décor that would make Pinterest jealous? Check. Guests strutting their stuff in “summer chic” outfits while a DJ dropped beats that made you forget it was December in Pretoria? Triple check. There was even a photo-op area complete with lemons dangling on twine (because why not?) and a branded moped that screamed, “Live your best Mediterranean life!”

The real showstopper? A seafood braai, Ocean Basket style. Picture this: fresh lobster, glistening king prawns, and good-looking men behind the grill.  Thought I had died and went to foodie heaven. If that wasn’t enough, the harvest table finally opened, and we all shamelessly piled our plates high.

Celebrating Mama Liza Lazarides: The Legacy of Ocean Basket

Then came the moment of reflection – a touching nod to Ocean Basket’s roots. We gathered to hear about the powerhouse behind it all: Mama Liza Lazarides. Little did she know, the family traditions she passed on would one day inspire a South African restaurant empire. And now, as Mama Liza celebrates her 90th birthday, her legacy of love, food, and family still thrives. The cherry on top? Her signature baklava – a dessert so good it could convert even the staunchest of sweet-tooth sceptics.

Since 1995, Ocean Basket has been a go-to for South Africans craving fresh Mediterranean vibes without the price tag of an overseas flight. With over 200 locations across 16 countries (yes, even Kazakhstan gets to enjoy that famous seafood braai), the heart of the brand hasn’t changed: it’s all about sharing good food, great company, and a story that started with one family’s dream.
