Rendezvous Sunday Brunch at Park Hyatt Johannesburg: A Refined Culinary Experience at Room 32

A Luxury Sunday Brunch in the Heart of Johannesburg

Brunch is the celebration of late mornings and early afternoons, and enjoying it at what is one of Joburg’s opulent restaurants is an experience we should all have. Offering a four-hour affair, the Rendezvous Sunday Brunch at Park Hyatt Johannesburg is where you can relax and enjoy an afternoon specially curated for you, complete with gourmet food, soft music, and the most attentive hospitality you’ll experience.

The Setting

Set within a restored heritage residence influenced by the work of Herbert Baker, we were made to feel like royalty fromthe moment we drove onto the premises. Doors opened for us, and car valeted, we were ushered into Room 32, the Park Hyatt Johannesburg’s signature restaurant.

Walking through the white stucco arches that framed the terrace, we stepped into a greenhouse complete with a large mirror that adds more depth to the space. Above, a glass conservatory roof allows natural light to flood the restaurant while black metal beams add a modern edge. Wooden ceiling fans, overhead heaters and trailing greenery soften the structure.

The marble table tops are simply styled with a single rose in a small glass bottle. The setting is refined, relaxed and comfortable – perfectly suited for a long, leisurely Sunday brunch.

The Service

Welcomed with the soft sounds of a saxophone playing, the experience at Room 32 at Park Hyatt Johannesburg immediately felt personal. We were adorned with blankets, and the heaters overhead were adjusted to a temperature of our liking.

Treated like care, the staff are the stars of Room 32. Attentive without being intrusive, they took care of us until we drove out. The food came out in a timely manner, and the table was reset after each course. They knew the menu well and offered helpful recommendations, guiding us through the selections with confidence.

Warm, professional and genuinely considerate, they remained present throughout the afternoon, quietly making sure every detail was taken care of so we could simply sit back and enjoy the moment.

The Menu

Presented by Executive Chef Karel Jacobs, the cuisine at Room 32, Park Hyatt Johannesburg is contemporary South African with European and Asian influences. Expect to enjoy your local favourites, but elevated.

A plated experience that takes you on a culinary journey, the menu is comprised of:

  • Eggs
  • Starters
  • Mains
  • Sweets

Eggs

Selecting a dish from each, we ordered the Mzansi Shakshuka and Beef Brisket Benedict from the eggs menu section.

Surprisingly, both stacked on a bun, I had never seen a shakshuka presented in such a way. Less saucy than what is usually expected, the Mzansi Shakshuka comprises boerewors, red pepper chutney, poached eggs made to your liking, and greens all stacked on a bun. It is rich but not overpowering, with my favourite element of the dish being the red pepper chutneys. They add a slightly sweet taste and soft texture to the dish.

Beautifully assembled, the Beef Brisket Benedict perfectly balanced the sweet, savoury and creamy flavour profile. The brisket was melt-in-your-mouth tender and was carried well on the bun.

Classics elevated, and you couldn’t go wrong with either one.

Starters

The breakfast portion of brunch being done, it was now time for the lunch starters. I opted for the Mussel Laksa and Beef Short Rib.

Served with soft bread, the mussels were soaking in a fragrant, creamy coconut curry broth. It had a hint of heat that gradually built up as you kept eating. Thoroughly enjoyed these and could have easily gone in for a second serving.

The Beef Short Rib was served with puréed butternut and topped with crispy onion rings. The meat was tender and on the sweeter side of life. I really appreciated that the butternut wasn’t sweetened and they let its naturally nutty flavour complement the sweetness of the short rib. In addition to the crispiness of the onion complementing the tenderness of the red meat, it’s a dish that dances beautifully on the palate.

Mains

For mains, the Swordfish and Chicken Salad  were ordered.

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting to see, but, needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The swordfish was set on a pleasantly sweet stone fruit glaze. It was paired with  pap, atchar and pickled radish. The radish brought an unexpected brightness to the dish that paired well with the sweet and heat of the course. The fish was, unfortunately, slightly dry, but the flavours more than redeemed the dish.

The Chicken Salad was light, fresh and nutty. An Asian slaw, layered with cashew nuts and lightly seasoned chicken breasts, all tied together with an earthy, creamy peanut dressing. It was topped with crispy onions that further added texture to the dish.

Sweet

Finishing strong with something soft and sweet, a Vanilla Cheesecake , French Toast and Tiramisu were ordered.

All decadent and not overpowering, I was living my sweet tooth’s fantasy.

The Vanilla Cheesecake is served with a berry compôte. It’s sublimely smooth. I am not an inherently cheesecake person, but this one is definitely for the books.

The French Toast was crunchy around the edges, soft in the centre and generously filled with a creamy custard. It’s served with fresh fruits and cinnamon ice cream.

A Tiramisu that would make an Italian proud, it’s light, bitter, creamy, rich, not overly sweet but still indulgent. I literally couldn’t get enough.
