Spring fashion 2019: Do it in style for the perfect look

August 22, 2019

Stay neutral

Been there, done that? Monochrome neutrals are out and ready to play for spring 2019. The comme ci, comme ca chic trend is this coming spring’s most anticipated look. Having already been seen on so many Instagram influencers who are pulling off the head-to-toe neutrals, as demonstrated by stylist and consultant Elim Chu, this is for everyone who enjoys a raw hem and structured tailoring.

You can achieve this minimalist look with items you probably already have in your wardrobe. Just layer a variety of fabrics and textures of pastel nude tones and monochromatic shades in grey, taupe and white. Have your own unique approach to this trend by contrasting with textures like silks and cashmere with linen bottoms for a light layering in spring.

I find that loose blouses and boxy trousers added with vintage accessories for a touch of that ‘French Vogue’ contemporary esthetic are an unmistakable outfit win.

Ultra-feminine polka dots

Polka dots are ready for a comeback! The biggest trend you’ll definitely spot this spring is the classic black and white print. The pattern can range from wispy pastels to vibrant bolds. Oversized dots paired with smaller dots. Perfectly versatile for the office or when you want to make a really dramatic style statement – whatever it is polka dots have you covered.

The sartorial print never really ceases to be out of the fashion focus, you can still rock it even during the cooler seasons. Polka dots add a fun and flirtatious energy to any look. They are a sure investment even if Minnie Mouse wore it first.

Have fun with it! The rules were meant to be broken with this trend. A polka dot midi-dress with ruffled detailing in the skirt and sleeves will look sophisticated especially worn with ankle strap heels. The only accessory you’ll need is a bright solid colour like a yellow-mustard tote and you’re all set to go!

Casual or formal, polka dots are perfect for either.

Woven wonders

The woven bag – A major 70’s fashion influence. Woven bags are no longer just for the beach. A scroll through Instagram will reveal just about everyone from fashion influencers to style stars, such as the Hadid sisters and Selena Gomez, carrying one.

Available in a multitude of styles, the only real qualifier a is that it’s made of woven material. If your woven bag is a casual looking one that inspires a ‘lazing at the beach’ feel, embrace the boho-style by pairing it with an LWD (little white dress) and relaxed shoes such as wedges or metallic gladiator sandals (extra points if your dress has a polka dot print).

Woven doesn’t have to mean casual. If you want to wear your woven bag to a more classy occasion feel free to do so. Gucci released a fabulous black and red woven mini shoulder bag with gold monogram detail – so luxe! But for more of a value buy try smaller, formal styles that have a clutch or baguette structure.

Animal instincts

We’re going wild for leopard print!

Giving polka dots and florals a run for their money, leopard prints are bold, powerful and perpetually sexy. A lot of this trend has to do with ‘the Naomi’ (yes, so I’m a little biased) – a slightly floaty looking, just-over-the-knee leopard print skirt created by Australian fashion label Realisation Par.

This coming season, pretty much every item of clothing imaginable will be available in leopard print. Only you will get to decide how wild you would like to get.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with leopard prints in unlikely shades. Indigo and lemon versions work excellently, exuding youthful allure.
