Unlocking Youth Opportunities: Umuzi’s 1, 2, 3 Mentorship Drive

What if all it took to change a life was one conversation?

What if the difference between a dead end and a door opening was simply one person giving 30 minutes of their time?

In South Africa, over 4.7 million young people are not in employment, education, or training. That’s almost half of all 15–34-year-olds. And yet, many of these young people are skilled, hungry to grow, and just one connection away from opportunity.

Umuzi – a pioneering organisation accelerating youth into high-value careers in tech, digital and creativity – has been working to bridge the education-employment gap for over a decade. But training alone isn’t enough. Access is everything – and social capital is often the missing piece. It’s not just about what you know, but who you can call, learn from, or be seen by.

That’s where the 1, 2, 3 Mentorship Drive comes in – a refreshingly simple, low-effort, high-impact way to give back.

How the 1, 2, 3 Mentorship Drive Works

1 person – A mentor who cares.
2 conversations – Quick, casual, flexible.
3 meaningful actions – CV feedback. A recommendation. A part-time job offer. A chance to practice interview skills. An introduction that could mean the world.

That’s it. No weekly calls. No paperwork. No red tape. Just real talk, practical advice, and the kind of support that opens doors.

“This is about removing the pressure and making mentorship doable for everyone,” says Fiona Tabraham, Executive Director of the Experience Lab at Umuzi. “It’s not about being a guru. It’s about being generous. You already have what someone else needs: experience, perspective, a network.”

And in a country where so many young people are stuck outside the system looking in, mentorship becomes more than just a kind gesture – it’s a gateway. Social capital is the currency that opens doors, makes introductions, creates chances. Most professionals have it. Young people don’t. This programme is a chance to use your network, your experience, your influence – however small it may seem – to make real, tangible change. Stop waiting for the system to fix itself. Be the connection someone else doesn’t have.

Join the Movement: Be the Connection Someone Needs

The 1, 2, 3 Mentorship Drive is coordinated by the Umuzi team. Participants receive a digital Mentor Pack with all the guidance needed, from conversation tips to ethical guidelines; they’re then matched with a young person, and together, decide how to connect and move forward.

There’s no catch. No long-term commitment. Just one opportunity to show up – and make it count.

You are 1 person. Make 2 meaningful connections. Take 3 powerful actions – and help build real futures.
