A Guide to Oil Cleansers: Benefits and How to Use Them

December 29, 2024

Oil Cleanser: The Foundation of Your Skincare Routine

A good cleanser is the cornerstone of any effective skincare routine. I learned this the hard way when a poorly chosen cleanser turned my clear skin into a breakout nightmare in just a few days. During one of my worst skincare struggles, I discovered the magic of oil cleansing—and I’ve been hooked ever since.

What Is an Oil Cleanser?

An oil cleanser is a skincare product made from one or a blend of oils, designed primarily for the face but versatile enough to use on your body and hair. It works on the principle that “like attracts like,” meaning the oils in the cleanser bind to the natural oils and impurities on your skin, effectively lifting them away.

What Do Oil Cleansers Do?

Oil cleansers not only bind to our sebum but also remove impurities and buildup, leaving your skin clean and refreshed. This has been a game-changer for me! My skin is notoriously oily and prone to whiteheads and blackheads, which oil cleansing has helped manage significantly.

My Favourite Oil Cleanser

Currently, my go-to oil cleanser is the Avon Cannabis Sativa Oil Cleanse & Calm Transforming Oil to Milk Cleanser. Made with cold-pressed cannabis sativa seed oil, it’s rich in anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It not only removes impurities and excess sebum but also calms my skin, leaving it clean, moisturised, and supple. With consistent twice-a-day use, I’ve noticed reduced redness and blemishes within a week. Even my nodular acne has significantly decreased in size—a truly happy moment for me!

How to Use Oil Cleansers

Oil cleansers are incredibly simple to use and don’t require any skin preparation. In fact, applying them directly to dry skin is recommended to maximise their effectiveness. Here’s my routine:

  1. Start with clean, dry hands.
  2. Dispense two pumps or shakes of oil into your palms.
  3. Rub your hands together to warm the oil, then gently massage it onto your face and neck.
  4. Add a small amount of water to emulsify the oil, turning it into a milky consistency.
  5. Massage again, focusing on areas with makeup or buildup, then rinse thoroughly with warm water.
  6. Pat your face dry with a soft towel or let it air dry.

This simple process leaves my skin feeling soft, hydrated, and thoroughly cleansed.

Can Oil Cleansing Cause Breakouts or Worsen Acne?

Oil cleansers can potentially cause breakouts if the wrong type of oil is used. Certain oils, such as hydrocarbon-based (petroleum) and comedogenic oils like coconut and olive oil, can clog pores and lead to further congestion.

To avoid this, experiment to find an oil cleanser that works best for your skin type. When chosen wisely, oil cleansers offer benefits that everyone can enjoy.

Benefits of Oil Cleansing Compared to Traditional Cleansers

Oil cleansers stand out because they don’t strip your skin of its natural oils, unlike traditional cleansers containing harsh surfactants. Instead, they leave your skin feeling refreshed, hydrated, and clean. Here are some additional benefits:

  • Maintain your skin barrier.
  • Remove makeup and sunscreen effectively.
  • Provide a deep cleanse.
  • Leave your skin moisturized.
  • Balance your skin’s oil production with regular use.
  • Offer added benefits depending on the oils used, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or anti-aging properties.

Oil cleansing has revolutionised my skincare routine, transforming my skin from oily and acne-prone to clear and balanced. Whether you’re new to oil cleansing or looking for a better alternative to traditional cleansers, it’s worth exploring this gentle yet effective method. Remember to choose an oil cleanser that suits your skin type, and you’ll likely see the benefits in no time!
