Once resident DJ and now the host of The Mix Capital, DJ Fae Fae is the one to look up to and out for. Real name Faith Makubung, she is the second of three kids and was born to be part of the entertainment industry. A fact that is indisputable when you follow her industry timeline.
Limpopo born and Centurion bred, DJ Fae Fae is here to cement and seal the show’s stance on women empowerment in the industry. Having officially started her mixing career in 2019, she went out of her way to upskill and learn the DJing craft. On this journey, she was adamant about not being, especially, taking advantage of sexually.
It is no secret that gender inequality is rife in this here male-dominated industry. When she asked DJ Dimplez’ manager to assist in finding someone to teach her how to play on the decks, she told him, “If I’m gonna do this, I need you to find me somebody that’s not gonna mack on me, try to have sex with me, try to manipulate me… These are my conditions.”
Gone through to find a female DJ to teach her, she was unfortunately unsuccessful on this quest. Most were not giving lessons due to time restrictions or that their endeavours were completely cancelled- as was the case with DJ Zinhle’s school. Knowing that most of the male DJs were giving lessons, it was important that he respects her as a women first and foremost before they could continue with anything. Cue DJ Hudson. He taught her how to mix and essentially DJ.
The Mix Capital
An all-female show that serves to entertain and empower. DJ Fae Fae had her heart set out on being the host for The Mix Capital. “All of us had the opportunity to audition to be the presenter of the show and I remember when that opportunity came,” she says, “I was like this is it. I’m fetching my show. Like Faith – if you not gonna get this show, ei ei ei, you playing games bruh.”
Knowing that the show will elevate to its highest potential, it is the perfect vehicle for Fae Fae to drive. A channel where girls can look up to and know that not only can they also be DJs but that a platform already exists where they can execute their dreams with no prejudice due to their womanhood.
“The Mix Capital is about putting female DJs on. Knowing that there’s a lot of men that want girls to transact their skills for sex,” emphasises DJ Fae Fae.
Growing up and looking up to the likes of Bonang and Alex Cage, her current faves are fellow workmate Kandis Kardashian and DJ PH. A lover of hip-hop and R’n’B, she swears that her true love is Afro-beats. You can find her mixes on SoundCloud and the YFM site.
