South African Innovators Invited to Compete for Global Health Awards Worth US$30,000

June 12, 2026

South Africans Can Win US$30,000 in the Go Healthy with Taiwan 2026 Health Innovation Competition

South Africa has a long track record of solving complex problems with limited resources — and now, a global platform is offering serious funding to prove it on the world stage. The Go Healthy with Taiwan 2026 campaign is officially open to South African submissions, with three global prizes of US$30,000 each up for grabs. If you work in health, wellness, technology, sports science or community development, this is arguably the most underutilised opportunity of the year. The deadline is 5 August 2026.

What Is Go Healthy with Taiwan 2026?

Go Healthy with Taiwan is a global proposal campaign run by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and coordinated in South Africa by Impilo Global Events. The campaign’s 2026 theme is “Designing Healthier Futures Together,” and it invites organisations, entrepreneurs, researchers, and community leaders worldwide to submit innovative proposals that combine local needs with Taiwanese expertise.

The focus areas are smart healthcare, sports technology, fitness innovation, cycling, preventative healthcare and community wellbeing. Critically, proposals should not be purely theoretical — organisers are looking for practical, scalable solutions that can be implemented in the real world using Taiwanese products and partnerships.

This is not South Africa’s first shot at the campaign. In 2025, the competition attracted 638 proposals from 55 countries, and despite limited local promotion, South African entries still impressed the judges. This year, the Taiwanese team is putting full weight behind the South African launch — because they believe this country has what it takes to win.

Who Can Enter and What Are the Prizes?

The eligibility list is broad by design. Impilo Global Events has specifically encouraged the following groups to submit:

  • Entrepreneurs and startups in health tech or wellness
  • Universities and research institutions
  • NGOs and community health organisations
  • Healthcare professionals and sports scientists
  • Community leaders working on health outcomes

The prize structure is genuinely compelling. The top three winning proposals globally each receive US$30,000. The top six finalists travel to Taiwan for enterprise visits, hands-on health innovation experiences and professional pitch coaching. The top 20 finalists receive one-on-one mentorship and collaboration access with Taiwanese companies.

Even if your proposal doesn’t win outright, the network value alone makes submission worthwhile. Taiwan’s healthcare and technology ecosystem is world-class — and building relationships there can open doors that are otherwise very difficult to access from South Africa.

Why South Africa Is Well-Positioned to Win

South Africa’s healthcare landscape presents exactly the kind of multi-layered challenge that drives meaningful innovation. The country faces chronic disease burdens, stretched public health infrastructure, massive inequality in health access, and a growing tech-savvy youth population that is already building solutions independently.

Ellen Hsu, Director of the Taiwan Trade Centre Johannesburg, put it plainly at the campaign’s local launch: South African proposals have already stood out despite minimal promotion. With the campaign now being actively driven locally, the bar for visibility is cleared — what remains is the quality of the ideas.

Sectors with particular potential include community-based preventative health platforms, AI-assisted diagnostic tools for rural clinics, digital mental health solutions, sports science applications for youth development, and cycling-based mobility or wellness interventions in urban and peri-urban areas.

How to Build a Strong Proposal

The campaign isn’t looking for a pitch deck — it’s looking for a partnership proposal. Specifically, your submission should explain how a local challenge or opportunity can be addressed by combining your ground-level implementation capability with Taiwanese technology, products or expertise.

A few principles that tend to land well in global health innovation competitions:

  • Anchor your proposal in a real, documented problem — use local data where possible
  • Name the specific Taiwanese technology or sector you want to partner with
  • Show scalability — how could this work beyond your initial community or region?
  • Keep the language clear and the impact measurable

Clive Maistry, South Africa’s brand ambassador for the campaign, notes that participants who have engaged with Taiwan’s innovation ecosystem firsthand consistently describe it as a revelation — the country has quietly built one of the world’s most integrated health technology ecosystems, covering everything from wearables and AI diagnostics to smart cycling infrastructure.

The Bigger Picture: Africa-Asia Health Collaboration

This campaign sits within a broader strategic shift. Taiwan is actively positioning itself as a global connector in health innovation, and it is looking beyond traditional Western partnerships. For Africa, that creates genuine opportunity — not just for prize money, but for long-term collaboration, technology transfer, and market access.

The 2025 campaign saw African entries include a low-cost AI imaging platform and cervical cancer screening technology developed on the continent. These weren’t academic experiments — they were practical tools addressing real gaps. The 2026 campaign is aiming for more than 800 submissions across five continents, and Africa is explicitly part of that growth target.

South Africa’s participation in Go Healthy with Taiwan 2026 is, at its core, a chance to put local solutions in front of a global audience and build the kind of cross-border relationships that can change the trajectory of a project or organisation.
