This spring, Hyde Park Corner bursts into bloom with its Made to Bloom Clivia Exhibition. On show for consecutive weekends, the main event is from 9 through 14 September. The centre court has been transformed into an exposition of one of South Africa’s most cherished plants.

Anything but your ordinary garden show, the Made to Bloom display is an exclusive presentation of the plants from three of the country’s leading Clivia collectors. Clivias, whose beautiful orange blooms carry an undertone of heritage and handmade craftsmanship, are natives of southern Africa and can be seen growing amidst woodlands, rocky outcrops, and dark garden alcoves. Brought to England in the 19th century, they became the rage worldwide, subsequently also reaching Asia when Japan conquered China. Cultivation within Japan and China now constitutes a multimillion-dollar industry and rare species that can attract a significant prices.
