Earlier this year, AFROPUNK announced its return to South Africa for one of the country’s most anticipated events – the AFROPUNK Joburg Festival. Following the announcement, fans from all over the country and parts of the continent took to social media to show their excitement about the artist line-up, which includes the likes of Solange, Miguel, Goldlink and Masego as the headliners. After much speculation, AFROPUNK is proud to confirm that African Giant Burna Boy will also be headlining the festival and performing many of his hits, which fans have been eagerly awaiting.
AFROPUNK’s lineup for 2019 is full of world-class acts, such as Sho Madjozi, whose hit song “John Cena” has become an international sensation, London-born artist NAO, and many more impressive artists. The festival has also managed to bring together, legendary group, The Kwani Experience, after eight years apart – a treat most fans are looking forward to.

The line-up also includes Urban Village, Busiswa, and Blinky Bill who is expected to keep South African fans entertained at the festival. To conclude this year’s artists roster, AFROPUNK has the likes of JazziDisciples, Brazillian DJ collective Batekoo, DJ Kenzhero, and Zara Julius who will be joining Gina Jeanz and Lelowhatsgood behind the DJ booth.
AFROPUNK’s theme for 2019 is WE SEE YOU. This is a message that brings together the AFROPUNK ideology and the people who support it under the banner of acknowledgement, and in resistance to those who strive to oppress.

A new addition to this year’s festival is “The Championship Ball”, a collaboration between Le Grand Ball and Vogue Nights Jozi. Vogue Nights Jozi and Le Grand Ball aim to redefine and reimagine the nightlife scene in Johannesburg by creating safer spaces for queer, trans and non-binary bodies through ballrooms, which push the boundaries of music, fashion and dance. These joint movements serve as a springboard for queer excellence, performance and give a platform for bodies that are usually side-lined in regular spaces in the city.
The Championship Ball will bring together houses from Johannesburg and all around the country to compete in a runway presentation across four categories. Joburg based House of Diamonds and House of Rêve will be joined by a 3rd house, the winner of the upcoming Le Grand Ball. The winning house will walk away with a cash prize and crowned as the grand champion.
